Highclere Castle

Highclere Castle
Architect: Charles Barry (with Thomas Allom)
Location: Hampshire, England
Year: 1839 (rebuild completed)
Visited: Summer 2024
Why it matters: An iconic example of Victorian-era Jacobethan architecture, instantly recognizable as the filming location for Downton Abbey. Grand, historic, and still privately lived in.

Why It’s Iconic:
Highclere isn’t just a stately home—it’s a cultural landmark. Designed by Charles Barry (of Houses of Parliament fame), this ornate country house oozes aristocratic drama inside and out. Touring it feels like walking through living history, complete with secret libraries, grand staircases, and sweeping views over 1,000 acres of English parkland. The Downton Abbey connection gives it extra resonance, but even without it, Highclere holds its own as a marvel of scale, detail, and preservation.
